Basics
What it means
The percentage of patients with a certain type and stage of cancer who are still alive 5 or 10 years after diagnosis. It is a group statistic, not a prediction for a specific patient, and it varies a great deal depending on the type, stage and individual response to treatment.

- Prognosis
- An estimate of the likely course of the disease. It depends on the type of cancer, the stage and the response to treatment.
- Adenocarcinoma
- A subtype of carcinoma that arises in glandular cells, that is, cells that produce or secrete certain substances. It can appear in organs such as the lung, colon, pancreas or prostate.
- Benign tumor
- A growth that does not invade the surrounding tissues and does not produce metastases. Although it may sometimes need treatment or monitoring, a benign tumor is not considered cancer.
