Basics
What it means
A cancer of the plasma cells, a type of immune system cell found in the bone marrow. It can affect the bones, the kidneys and the normal production of blood cells.

- Stem cell transplant
- A procedure in which damaged bone marrow is replaced with healthy stem cells. It can be autologous (your own cells) or allogeneic (from a donor). Used especially in leukaemias and lymphomas.
- Adenocarcinoma
- A subtype of carcinoma that arises in glandular cells, that is, cells that produce or secrete certain substances. It can appear in organs such as the lung, colon, pancreas or prostate.
- Benign tumor
- A growth that does not invade the surrounding tissues and does not produce metastases. Although it may sometimes need treatment or monitoring, a benign tumor is not considered cancer.
