• Esenzione 048: co-pay exemption for cancer care

  Jurisdiction: Italy

  With a cancer diagnosis you are exempt from the ticket (co-pay) for visits, exams and medicines related to the tumour, its complications and follow-up (exemption code 048). Request the exemption certificate from your ASL of residence, presenting medical certification from a public or accredited hospital.

• Invalidità civile: fast-track assessment for cancer

  Jurisdiction: Italy

  Cancer patients can claim invalidità civile, which unlocks percentage-based allowances and related benefits; by Legge 80/2006 the medical assessment for oncology patients must be held within 15 days of the application. Have your doctor file the certificato medico introduttivo, then apply online through INPS or via a patronato.

• Legge 104: 3 days/month paid leave (patient + carer)

  Jurisdiction: Italy

  With recognised severe disability (Legge 104/1992, art. 3 comma 3), a working patient — or a family member who assists them — is entitled to 3 days of paid leave per month, also usable in hours. Apply online through INPS (or via a patronato) and notify your employer.

  A monthly allowance for people assessed as totally invalid who cannot walk or perform everyday activities without a carer's help — granted regardless of income and age, which can matter during the heaviest treatment phases. • Assegno ordinario di invalidità (income support)

  Jurisdiction: Italy

  If illness reduces your working capacity to less than a third and you have at least 5 years of contributions (3 of them in the last 5), you can claim this INPS allowance — and you may keep working. Apply online through INPS attaching the SS3 medical certificate, or go through a patronato.

• Right to reversible part-time (d.lgs 81/2015)

  Jurisdiction: Italy

  Employees with oncological diseases whose working capacity is reduced have the right to switch from full-time to part-time and to return to full-time when their condition improves (d.lgs 81/2015, art. 8). Request it from your employer with certification from the ASL medical commission.

• Caregiver: congedo straordinario up to 2 years

  A cohabiting family member of a patient with recognised severe disability (Legge 104) can take up to 2 years of paid leave (congedo straordinario) over their working life, in one or more periods. The caregiver applies online through INPS or via a patronato, attaching the severe-handicap verbale.

• Wig support: regional contributions + tax break

  Jurisdiction: Italy

  For chemotherapy-induced alopecia, regions and ASL grant contributions toward buying a wig, with amounts and rules that vary by region; nationally, the cost is also deductible as a healthcare expense (Agenzia delle Entrate, risoluzione 9/E/2010). Ask your ASL (ufficio protesi/assistenza integrativa) about the local contribution.
